Your Opportunity To Make Money Out of Waste
- Manzini Municipality establishes Buy-Back-Centre
- Facility is already operational and is open to individuals, businesses, schools, etc
In an effort to empower citizens of Manzini and surrounding areas economically whilst also reducing the amount of waste that finds its way into the Municipal Controlled Dumpsite as well as promoting a clean environment, the Municipal Council of Manzini has established a Buy-Back-Centre. The facility, which is located opposite SEDCO estate and below the municipal abattoir, is already operational and members of the public can now access its services and in the process generate income. A Buy-Back-Centre is a facility that buys recyclable waste from members of the public and the fees payable are largely determined by the waste material’s weight. When waste is brought to the facility it is weighed and the person bringing it is paid instantly on site.
The Manzini Buy-Back-Centre buys in quantities of 1kg. This means that if a customer brings in waste that weighs 2.8kg only 2kg will be accepted and paid for. Individual citizens, business establishments and schools, amongst other waste generators, are encouraged to make use of the facility for disposal of recyclable waste material and to generate income. For collection of bulk waste, the company that is running the facility in the form of a Public Private Partnership (PPP) with the Municipality, A.M.Z. Recycling, can be contacted on 7631 1571/7631 4731/7673 8493 and collection will be done free of charge. The Manzini Buy-Back-Centre opens from 7:30am to 5pm from Mondays to Fridays and at 8am to 1pm on Saturdays. It is closed on Sundays and public holidays.
…TYPES OF WASTE THAT CAN BE SOLD AT BUY-BACK-CENTRE
The newly established Buy-Back-Centre accepts a variety of recyclable waste material including paper (e.g. old newspapers, old books and exercise books), cartons, plastic bottles (preferably clear bottles), tins (e.g. soft drink and beer cans as well as paint containers), old car batteries, steel waste, corrugated iron sheets and vehicle body metal, glass bottles (e.g. beer bottles and soft drink bottles), roof tiles (e.g. Harvey and concrete tiles), clear plastic bags (e.g. cement and furniture wrap) and scrap vehicles. Fire extinguishers, copper wire, water taps and water meter, gas cylinders, manholes, street lights, road signs, guardrails, vehicle tyres, window panes, cooking oil bottles and wood products (e.g. old furniture) are, however, not acceptable at the facility.
…HOW MUCH MONEY YOU CAN MAKE FROM THE FACILITY
It is important to emphasise that the Manzini Buy-Back-Centre accepts waste quantities in intervals of one kilogramme (1kg) and payments are made instantly on site. It is also important to mention that prices fluctuate depending on demand from the market. Therefore, it is possible to be paid different amounts of money for the same type of waste on different occasions. That is normal with buy-back-centres. The following are the current prices at the Manzini Buy-Back-Centre;
TYPE OF WASTE | PAYABLE FEE |
Steel waste | E2/kg |

…BUY-BACK-CENTRE ESTABLISHMENT FORMS PART OF MANZINI IDP
Establishment of the Buy-Back-Centre forms part of Manzini Municipality’s strategic deliverable as pronounced in the ongoing Manzini Integrated Development Plan (IDP). It also resonates with the United Nations 2030 agenda on sustainable development. Goal Number 11 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) calls for effort to be made towards making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. Having waste being sent to the Buy-Back-Centre instead of being littered anywhere will help reduce land pollution and promote city cleanliness. The Municipality has in place an Integrated Waste Management Plan and is working in collaboration with the Eswatini Environment Authority (EEA)on a number of initiatives that are meant to keep the environment clean and sustainable. The Municipal Council of Manzini appeals to citizens of the city to make use of the newly established Buy-Back-Centre. Residents are urged to separate their household waste and ensure that only non-recyclable waste goes into the Municipal Controlled Dumpsite. In that way they will be able to generate income whilst also giving the Municipal Controlled Dumpsite an extended useful life.
…20 PROPERTY OWNERS PAY RATES, WILL ENJOY FREE PARKING IN TOWN
The Municipal Council of Manzini would like to congratulate the following property owners who have won themselves Umlamuleli Prepaid Parking Cards for paying their rates during the festive season. The winners are requested to collect their Prepaid Cards from the Rates Hall, during working hours. They are also requested to bring their identity cards. The Municipality rolled out a rates payment promotion at the beginning of the festive season and five winners were raffled each of the four weeks; which gives a total of 20 winners. Through the Umlamuleli Prepaid Cards the winners will be able to enjoy free parking in the City of Manzini until they exhaust the credit that has been loaded in their cards. The Municipality further expresses appreciation to all ratepayers who made it a point that they pay their rates during and before the festive season. Rates payment remains a legal obligation for all property owners within the urban area and it is through such funds that the Municipality is able to provide the expected services to the city.
