What Stakeholders Can Do to Help Keep Municipal Skip Service Running
The Municipal Council of Manzini has recently procured a new skip truck and a number of skip bins that have already been placed for use by citizens in strategic areas around the city. The Municipality is grateful to stakeholders for their continued utilisation of the skip service. However, there are a number of practices that the Municipality would like to highlight; which practices have the potential to hamper the desired efficiency in relation to this service. Stakeholders are requested to avoid these practices in order to ensure the Municipality achieves the full useful life of this asset. The practices are highlighted below;
- DO NOT DEPOSIT HOT ASH IN THE SKIP BIN
The Municipality has noted that some people deposit hot ash in the skip bins. That practice is discouraged because hot ash ends up damaging the bin. If there is a need to dispose of hot ash, it is advisable that it is allowed to cool off before being tossed into the skip bin. In other instances, people hire the skip bin, deposit and burn waste in it. That is also not permitted as it shortens the lifespan of the skip bin.
- DO NOT DEPOSIT RUBBLE AND SAND IN THE SKIP BIN
It has been noted that some people hire the skip bin and load building rubble in it. That is not permitted because building rubble and sand are too weighty. When being lifted by the skip truck they cause damage to its hydraulic system; resulting in the truck experiencing unnecessary down periods. Some people deposit building rubble and then cover it with other forms of waste as a way of concealing it. The Municipality would like to plead with citizens to desist from that practice as by so doing they shorten the life of the skip truck. Floor and wall tiles are also not allowed in the skip bin. Same applies to concrete roof tiles. For transportation of such waste, citizens are advised to source alternative service providers. Stakeholders are advised that they are permitted to transport such waste to the municipal controlled dumpsite using their own transport. The controlled dumpsite is open from 7am to 4:30pm on a daily basis including weekends.
- AVOID DEPOSITING DEAD ANIMALS IN THE SKIP BIN
When left uncollected for a long time, dead animals end up rotting away and emitting a bad smell to the discomfort of neighbouring residents. Citizens are urged not to deposit such waste in the skip bins. The Municipality is always available for collection and disposal of dead animals. Citizens can access this service by contacting the Municipality’s 24/7 Call Centre (800 2004/2505 7000). Collection is done free of charge. Alternatively, citizens may transport such waste to the municipal controlled dumpsite.
- FORMS OF WASTE THAT CAN BE DEPOSITED IN THE SKIP BIN
The following are some of the types of waste that can be deposited in the skip bin;
- Grass
- Tree branches of a light weight (not heavy stems)
- Bulk waste such as planks
- Old furniture
- Bulk waste from the supermarkets
…THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT MUNICIPAL SKIP SERVICE
- The skip service is accessible at a fee of E100 per load
- Once booked and paid for, the Municipality transports it to the required site and, after 24 hours, collects it for disposal of the waste
- The responsibility to load the skip bin lies with the customer and not the Municipality. Overloading of the skip bin is discouraged
- All things constant, the service is availed to the customer a day or two after payment of the applicable fee
…KNOW YOUR TOWNSHIP’S WASTE COLLECTION DAYS
The Municipal Council of Manzini would like to remind residents about the waste collection schedule for the various townships. Residents are also reminded to ensure that waste is placed for collection by the refuse truck as early as 7am. They are further advised against placing waste for collection outside the scheduled collection days as such practice often results in the waste being scattered by stray dogs. Landlords are urged to make it a point that they inform new tenants about the waste collection schedule in order to avoid non-compliance.
