Rehabilitation of Meintjies Street, 3 Other CBD Roads Begins
Rehabilitation of Meintjies street, the road that is largely used by public transport as an entry/exit street into the main bus rank, is finally commencing. Rehabilitation of the pothole-riddled road forms part of the Municipality’s 2019-2024 Integrated Development Plan (IDP). The project has been awarded to Stefanutti Stocks Construction and will run for a period not exceeding six months; weather permitting. Other roads that form part of the project are Mahleka street (the road stretch from the Manzini Main Bus Rank up to Masalesikhundleni street near Dups Mall), a portion of Martin street (from Mahleka street down to the Manzini Magistrates Court) as well as the portion of Masalesikhundleni street (from Ngwane street near Estel House down to Mancishane street near Liqhaga residential apartments). Meintjies street will be rehabilitated in two phases for purposes of ensuring minimal traffic flow disruptions. The first phase will be the stretch between Manzini Central traffic lights near Woodmasters and the National Motor Spares establishment within the Manzini Business Park. That road stretch will be closed in a few days from now and motorists, including public transport vehicles, will be required to utilise the road network within the Manzini Business Park. A provision will, however, be made for residents and the business sector of Woodmasters to access their properties. The Manzini Business Park is the largely open space along Meintjies street which is well serviced with a surfaced road network. When the project stage gets to phase two of Meintjies street (from the National Motor Spares up to Ngwane street near Pep), the road will be open to motorists at half width. Once the contractor is done with Meintjies street, it will move on to the other roads that form part of the project scope. Motorists are urged to cooperate with the contractor and adhere to the traffic signage that will be installed within the project site. An arrangement will be made with bus rank marshals for purposes of efficient management of public transport flow during the road rehabilitation period.
…TOWN PLANNING SCHEME MEETING THIS EVENING
The Municipal Council of Manzini is in the process of reviewing the city’s Town Planning Scheme. A Town Planning Scheme is a legal document that regulates the use and development of land within an urban area. It determines, amongst others, provisions such as minimum plot sizes, maximum building height, number of units permitted per plot and permitted land uses. A draft review has been conducted and is ready for presentation to stakeholders. The Municipality has scheduled ward-to-ward stakeholder meetings, targeting both property owners and non-property owners, for purposes of allowing them an opportunity to influence the Town Planning Scheme. The stakeholder meetings have been grouped into precincts (several municipal wards per meeting). The first meeting, which will be held this evening at Living Waters School Hall, starting at 5:30pm, covers Ward 7 (Sterkstroom, Extension 19 and the area around Manzini Central High School) and Ward 8 (Madonsa, Thomasdale, Extension 6 and Mangwaneni). Residents of these wards are invited to the meeting which will run not more than 2 hours. Other meeting dates will be announced in due course.

The annual Philani Maswati Eswatini Biggest Braai is taking place in the City of Manzini this Friday following a two-year break owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. The City of Manzini is proud to once again be the host city for such a big event in our country. Such events have the benefit of improving social cohesion in the city as citizens get an opportunity to mingle and get to know each other. Businesses also take advantage of them for networking purposes and closing of new business deals. Moreover, the event comes with an economic benefit to ordinary citizens as they tap into the many trading opportunities that come with it. Furthermore, local and international tourists get to descend the city to enjoy a day and night of entertainment and fun as the event commences on Friday morning and ends the next morning. Manzini citizens are encouraged to support the event by buying the tickets and coming through to enjoy meat, make new friends and enjoy the fun. Corporates and other business establishments are also encouraged to make use of this opportunity for team building purposes. Most importantly, what is key to note is that by supporting the event one will be making a difference in the welfare of elderly citizens in the Kingdom.
