…PLEASE DON’T DISPOSE MEDICAL, E-WASTE IN STREET LITTER BINS
The Municipal Council of Manzini has noted with concern the improper disposal of medical and electronic waste in street litter bins across the city. This practice is strictly prohibited under the Waste Regulations of 2000 and residents are urged to refrain from engaging in it. Furthermore, the disposal of such waste in public open spaces and undeveloped plots is equally discouraged. Medical waste, which comprises items such as expired medications, syringes, surgical gloves, used bandages, face masks, needles and empty medical containers, poses significant risks to both public health and the environment. Similarly, electronic waste, also referred to as e-waste, can contain hazardous materials such as lead and mercury. E-waste includes discarded devices such as phones, chargers, home appliances, laptops and fluorescent tubes. If improperly disposed of, these materials can contaminate the environment and harm humans. The good news is that many components of e-waste can be recycled or refurbished, significantly reducing the environmental impact. The Municipality encourages residents to take advantage of her available services for the safe disposal of medical and electronic waste. To avoid the risks associated with improper disposal, citizens are reminded that they may be fined up to E25,000 for violating the regulations. The Municipality provides a separate collection service for medical and electronic waste. For assistance, residents can contact the Municipality through her 24/7 Call Centre (8002004/25057000), official WhatsApp lines (78082333/79082333/79664951) or email (info@manzinicity.co.sz). Let us all contribute to a cleaner, safer and more beautiful Manzini city.
…KEEP PLOTS WELL MAINTAINED, REMOVE VEGETATION OVERGROWTH
The Municipal Council of Manzini urges all property owners to ensure their plots, whether developed or undeveloped, are properly maintained and free of overgrown vegetation. This is in accordance with the Public Health Act of 1969. With the recent rains contributing to an alarming rise in vegetation overgrowth, many properties in the city have become overgrown with vegetation. Overgrown vegetation not only compromises the aesthetic appeal of the city but also creates hiding spots for criminals. Furthermore, neglected plots can attract pests such as rodents, insects and even snakes; which pose serious health threats to residents. Property owners who fail to address vegetation overgrowth in their properties risk legal consequences as failure to maintain vegetation on one’s property is a prosecutable offence. If you reside outside the immediate vicinity of the City of Manzini and are unsure who to contact for vegetation removal services in your property, the Municipality can assist by providing a list of service providers. For further assistance, residents can contact the Municipality through her 24/7 Call Centre (8002004/25057000), official WhatsApp lines (78082333/79082333/79664951) or email (info@manzinicity.co.sz). Let us all contribute to a cleaner, safer and more beautiful Manzini city.
