Manzini Region Municipalities Unite Against Climate Change
…Manzini, Matsapha, Malkerns, Mankayane dedicate next week to joint World Environment Week of Action
In show of unity and collaboration, the four municipalities under the Manzini region will next week dedicate next week to a 4-day joint commemoration of World Environment Week 2022. Working together with their respective stakeholders, the municipalities will from Monday 6th June to Thursday 9th June 2022 rollout a series of green activities as part of a concerted effort to fight climate change. The urban governments of Manzini, Matsapha, Malkerns and Mankayane will take turns in hosting events that are aimed at promoting green choices and sustainable living, clean- up the environment and restore the country’s habitat. The strong coalition of municipalities will not be delivering this first-of-its-kind initiative all by themselves but they have partnered with Yibutse Green !ction, a registered non-governmental organisation whose focus is community- based action for environmental stewardship.
World Environment Day is commemorated globally on the 5th June to create awareness and encourage positive action towards protection of the environment. The global theme for this year is ‘#OnlyOneEarth. Let’s take care of it’. The environmental week of action will be characterised by school exhibitions of upcycled or recycled products, tree-planting for purposes of rehabilitating dongas and prevention of soil erosion, restoration of wetlands, action against alien invasive species, picking of litter and environmental awareness. The pillar objective of the municipal coalition is a demonstration of unity amongst urban governments in the fight against climate change and promotion of environmental stewardship in general. Citizens of the Manzini, Matsapha, Malkerns and Mankayane are encouraged to join the events when it is time for their municipalities to host. The assembly point is the civic centre, and the starting time is 8am. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually since 1974, the World Environment Week of Action has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental outreach; with millions of people from across the world engaging to protect the planet. The following is the hosting schedule:
