Manzini Municipality Upcycling Competition: St Michael’s High Wins First Prize
St Micheal’s High School won first prize in a competition wherein environmental clubs from schools within the City of Manzini were challenged by the Municipal Council of Manzini to produce and showcase products that are made of recyclable waste. A total of eight schools participated in the competition which the Municipality introduced as part of celebration of the 2022 World Environment Day. The objective of the competition was to inculcate amongst young people the culture of waste minimisation through the concept of re-use, recycle and upcycle. Upcycling is the reuse of waste material in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original one. Schools that participated in the competition were St Micheal’s High, Manzini Central High, St Theresa’s High, Inkhanyeti School, Ngwane Park High, Mjingo High, Salesian High and St Paul’s High. The second prize went to Mjingo High School whilst St Theresa’s was awarded third prize. The panel of judges were from Eswatini Environment Authority, Yibutse Green !ction and Macmillan Education Eswatini. The exhibition was preceded by a tree planting exercise in various parts of the city as part of an effort to fight climate change. This is in line with goals number 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and 13 (Climate Action) of the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. The event, which was held on Monday, was the first chapter of a series of environment protection events that are to be hosted as part of a collaboration by Manzini region municipalities, namely; Manzini, Matsapha, Malkerns and Mankayane. The three municipalities attended the Manzini event. Likewise, Manzini Municipality is also attending their events. The Manzini region World Environment Week of Action will end on Thursday and hosted by Mankayane Town Board wherein winners of a Manzini region Inter-Schools Essay competition will be announced. Yesterday the host Municipality was Matsapha whilst today the event will be hosted by Malkerns. The following photos were taken during Monday’s event in Manzini…
